Mortal Kombat is back and better than ever in the next evolution of the iconic franchise. The all new Custom Character Variations give you unprecedented control to customize the fighters and make them your own. The new graphics engine showcasing every skull-shattering, eye-popping moment, brings you so close to the fight you can feel it. And featuring a roster of new and returning Klassic Fighters, Mortal Kombat's best in class cinematic story mode continues the epic saga over 25 years in the making.


Working on Mortal Kombat 1 has been very exciting. With the technical art team we developed setups that have never before been in realtime games. I have joined this project at its very start, which allowed me to do cutting-edge R&D developing new methods of creating realtime blood.

I tutored the VFX team in Niagara and creating custom Niagara modules, and set up the initial blood creation workflow from Houdini to Unreal. I created tutorial videos to take artists through this workflow step by step.


My production responsibilities included:

  • Houdini to Unreal Blood workflow development
  • Niagara Tutor
  • Team Management, client communication
  • Shader / Material creation & implementation
  • Niagara Particle creation & implementation
  • Unreal Blueprint and Niagara Module creation
  • VATs, Meshes, Textures

Some of the tasks I worked on for Mortal Kombat 1:

  • Creating animated blood meshes with VATs to be used with Houdini point caches
  • Building a library of static blood meshes for droplets and spray elements
  • Optimizing performance to achieve the highest quality for 60Hz playback
  • Art Directed Character FX
  • Directing particle motion/behavior from character/environment driven forces
  • Spline driven particle motion for character buff FX
  • Building library of pre-rendered content for fire/smoke/wisps
